Celebrations in many Christian homes have become festive orgies of consumption. Idolatrous revelries focus on food, drink, and unrighteous behavior. Spending money you don’t have on “the holidays” is an example of idolatry. What does idolatry have to do with holiday celebration? Idolatry in any age or season is usually a festive activity. During the drunken orgies of the Israelites in the desert idols were made of gold and the whole “worship” experience was one big blow-out party.

Is there anyone who is NOT counting the hours until Election 2012 becomes history? The electorate is nearly as weary of the campaign as the candidates who have been working at a feverish pace for weeks. There will be no political opinion from this quarter today, but I wanted to mark this potentially momentous event by sharing the lyrics of the song "One Day More" that ends the first act of Les Miserables as well as the finale.

The song itself bounces between the rebel students, the lovers Marius and Cosette, and the main character Jean Val Jean. I've selected the main elements of the song for the sake of clarity. Whether you vote Blue or Red, or somewhere in between, these words weigh heavy on the Election Eve.
