News this week was headlined by the massive response to Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day in support of free speech and a kiss-in planned by protesters against speech that does not endorse gay marriage. But things are not always as they appear…
Diversity among Christians or supporters for Gay-Marriage?
Some want to mis-characterize the chicken joint issue as a skirmish between Christians and the LGBT community. Part of the pro-gay marriage contingent used this simple summation to sell the boycott and protest of the franchise. Unfortunately, many people believed the lie.
That position assumes that all Christians share the same philosophy and so must all who support gay-marriage. Both sides of that assumption are wrong.
But Wait – Who’s Using Who in the Chick-Fil-A Controversy?
Let’s back up one more step. Didn’t politicians start this ruckus in the first place? The mayors of several large cities were the first to characterize the remarks of Dan Cathey (CEO Chick-Fil-A) as anti-gay and stupidly said that Chick-Fil-A would not be allowed in their cities if they had anything to say about it.
Unless these mayors are themselves ardent activists for gay marriage, why did they take it upon themselves to fire the first shot in this battle? Could they be using the LGBT community to feather their own political nests? Are they trying to bait Christians into responding with video or sound clips to increase their political capital in a calculated move to have the LGBT community step in behind their unworthy leadership?
Unless I missed something, the Chick-Fil-A skirmish was initiated by either the media or politicians, and not by either a Christian or LGBT supporter.
Smart Politics – Police Yourself
How many members of the LGBT community disagree with radical protest and rhetoric that judges success as achieving division and not resolution? How many Christians disagree with radical protest or rhetoric that deems division as success and not resolution? Who is best suited to determine what behavior within each community is acceptable?
Finding nuggets of hope among the hysterics reported in the mainstream media requires extensive research of print and online sources. I participate in a number of Christian forums. [No surprise] There are some disgustingly nasty people who label themselves ‘conservative christians’? I’ve read their work, corresponded with them, asked for clarification if needed, and moved on when there was no agreement to be reached.
The membership of any community is best served by policing their own.
Disciplining Christians Radicals
Flame-throwing is not the work of New Creations in Jesus Christ. When someone throws a verbal or written Molotov-cocktail in most Christian forums (online or otherwise) the others will step up and call out the offender. Challenges are usually polite but pointed. Group members police their own. If the bomber decides it’s his way or the highway the rest of us wish them “Bon voyage” on their soon-to-be solitary journey.
The most frequent topic of heated argument is homosexuality and the proper Christian response to the behavior itself and the person. Usually these are calm, serious, well-intentioned and honest exchanges. Sometimes a real radical speaks up and is quickly dealt with by the others. I have never seen a pile on of “Me too! Yeah, that’s right!” supporting such anti-gay garbage.
Jews vs Christians – Gays vs Christians
Jews and Christians have an obvious difference of opinion about right relationship with God. Yet this disagreement doesn’t produce national protest or outrage. When Jews and Christians work together for a common goal a place of compromise is reached that doesn’t require either side to fold on a primary point of faith. In Nazi Germany Hitler used this disagreement to build an empire for himself. The media and politicians set one faction against the other. It worked.
Are we seeing the same calculation in play in the US today?
Gays are set against Christians. Blacks are set against Whites. The young are set against the elderly in order to push a particular agenda about health care. Employees are set against employers. The non-obese are set against the obese. The entitled are set against the unentitled. (You figure out who belongs on either side.) North is set against the South.
Okay, I added that last one to make a point. You all know what happened in the Civil War. Are you willing to repeat it?
Don’t be duped by media and politicians.
WHO is setting one group against another? The media and politicians. I love Jesus Christ and (though I disagree) I love a gay person as much as any other. I disagree with the religious position of Jews. So what? I disagree with lots of things that people believe.
The real challenge before us it how to regain a strong, vibrant society and economy that will benefit everyone. Who began the Chick-Fil-A battle and who profits from it? Christians and LGBT supporter alike should be outraged by those who orchestrated the fight.
